Buying in Bulk

I have always been told that shopping at places like Sam’s Club and Costco save you tons of money! I always felt like I spent so much money there that I couldn’t get past the fact that maybe I didn’t need so much stuff so often. This weekend Sam’s Club had their membership-free weekend where they were open to the public. Jason and I went and only purchased toilet paper, paper towels and a few other small things that I needed for a party next weekend. We spent $50, but I do feel that we won’t be purchasing those items for some time. They also had great deals on several other things that we may eventually purchase such as mattresses, electronics and then of course food and paper products. The Sam’s Club membership was only $40 for the year which is not as bad as I thought it would be. I need to get a quote from Costco and then we will make the decision regarding a membership. I think as our boys grow up and start eating more and more it may be a good yearly investment. On a side note we took the boys to “Wet and Wild Wednesday” at the Kansas City Zoo last week. They have sprinklers and misters set up all over the zoo to “try” and keep you cool. $2 admission and $2 hot dogs, but of course we packed a lunch and did not buy a single thing. We spent $10 for the whole family (Jason’s brother included), and had a great time.

The Purple Crayon

There is a book I read to the boys called “Harold and the Purple Crayon,” where this little boy draws all these wonderful things and uses his imagination to bring them to life. I have two little “Harolds” in my house and one of them left a purple crayon in his pocket. When I did the laundry I discovered this purple crayon melted into all of our clothes in the dryer. Jason got lucky and the only things of his that were in this load were some underwear and socks. I, on the other hand was not so lucky! Those people who know me well know that I do not like to shop… AT ALL! When I find t-shirts on sale I buy a few in different colors and wear them forever. I usually buy one pair of jeans every 6 months or even a year, and I don’t go crazy on shoes. In this load of laundry were some of my beloved t-shirts that now have purple, oily stains all over them. I still wear them with pride, not caring what people will say or think because I hate shopping that much. I guess this gives me a huge advantage in the Financial Makeover because I know I won’t be spending any money. On a side note I did have to get my hair done, which I did for a great deal of $70. Plus, this only happens once a year or so.

Stop and Smell the Roses
user_icon   There is always so much going on in our lives, that sometimes it is hard to just sit back for a moment and take it all in. I was able to take this weekend off of work and enjoy my time off with some very good friends, and of course my husband. I think in order to remain sane - not just through this contest, but through life in general - we must all sit back and smell the roses every now and then. This causes a new reaction to the things you never think about on a daily basis. I missed my kids terribly, even though I was only away from them for 21 hours. I miss my husband terribly every day and it was so nice to be able to hang out with him and just do nothing at all. If I had to take anything away from this weekend it would be that, although we are still “in it to win it,” we definitely needed the brain break! We are back in action and ready to finish out this contest strong.

The Buzz

I was pretty spoiled when we lived in Arizona. Kia’s sister, Laci, is a hairstylist and would cut my hair every two weeks - and the boy’s hair when needed - for free.

Since moving back to Kansas City, I’ve been getting my hair cut every two to three weeks for a cost of $20. However, I’ve been cutting the boy’s hair myself and doing a pretty good job. The last couple of times I’ve cut their hair they’ve wanted to grow out the top more and fade in the sides to be able to “spike” their hair like dad does. This presented a problem for me because I have limited skills and can only use clippers. So this weekend we made a compromise. I cut the boy’s hair and my own. We all got buzz cuts, and are happy with them. The boys are excited to have the same haircut as me, and I can live with shorter hair and don’t mind, so far. Lessons learned. We found another way to save $40 a month!!

P.S. – THANK YOU Laci!
