With the spring time approaching we have run into some unexpected bills. Brisyn is turning 6 in a week, which is a short time after Easter. We are trying to plan an inexpensive party, which is easy with this kid because he just wants to have pizza at home with a piñata. When you add all of the other kids parties, and then Easter to it, things start to get a little out of control. Wesley has a birthday party for a little girl next week and I really enjoy making things (especially for little girls). I bought a hand mirror for $3.00, a stem of silk flowers for $3.00 and a gift bag for $1.00. I hot glued all the flowers on the back and then tied some ribbon around the handle. I now have a $7.00 gift for one 4 year-old little girl! Now if God can only grant me the strength to get through the party at Chuckee E Cheese!!! I am working on gift items and cost cutting ideas for Easter and Brisyn’s party, so I will let you know how I do next week when it is all said and done! |

| Uncle Sam...What no interest? |

Alright this is my first post, and I owe Kia a big THANK YOU for covering for me. I can’t begin to convey all my insights on our journey so far, only that it’s been a GREAT experience. Logging into our CommunityAmerica account, pay days and paying bills are fun, or at least as much fun as paying bills can be. We’ve become avid Dave Ramsey followers and are even beginning to step back from the day to day grind and start laying out our long-term financial goals.
Last month, I attended a “Budget Leaks” workshop at the Credit Union with the other Makeover families, that I thought was surely to be a hoot. To my surprise there were a lot of valuable lessons. One specific idea I thought I would share. Most of us enjoy loaning Uncle Sam money each pay day to build up a sizable return in the Spring. I thought this was the norm and rather enjoyed it myself. Come tax time, I would already have a plan for spending my refund. What I didn’t think about was what Charlie Walker informed us all of at the workshop; “Uncle Sam doesn’t pay interest.” Makes sense (cents) right?
I began thinking about Uncle Sam not paying interest; “damn the man” I thought. Instead of giving up, I began researching what my deductions should be, but I was intimidated with the possibly of owing Uncle Sam at the end of the year. Finally, I found a great resource on the IRS website. Uncle Sam’s IRS actually has a tool to help you figure this out. On the IRS website (IRS.gov) there is a calculator you can plug in your information and figure out what dedications you need to claim to break even. I just made the changes and added over a hundred dollars to my paycheck. |

I am officially on Spring Break for a week from school. No Homework! No Alarm Clocks! Freedom!!!!!
I did pick up an extra 12 hour shift at work, for some extra cash, but I am also taking the boys out of town for the week. The challenge this week is to spend only minimal money on gas and a little play time. We have been doing really well and I don’t want to lose that intensity, but it almost seems as though the money will be gone before we put our monthly contribution in savings. I don’t have to go shopping this week, because I made lasagna last week and we still have leftovers. The meal plan is definitely working! We still have more than enough food to last this week and maybe some of next week. I guess my blog doesn’t really have a point, but this is the second week in a row that Jason was going to try to write a little and got writers block! We'll see what happens next week! |
