Stop and Smell the Roses
user_icon   There is always so much going on in our lives, that sometimes it is hard to just sit back for a moment and take it all in. I was able to take this weekend off of work and enjoy my time off with some very good friends, and of course my husband. I think in order to remain sane; not just through this contest, but through life in general, we must all sit back and smell the roses every now and then. This causes a new reaction to the things you never think about on a daily basis. I missed my kids terribly even though I was only away from them for 21 hours. I miss my husband terribly every day and it was so nice to be able to hang out with him and just do nothing at all. If I had to take anything away from this weekend it would be that although we are still “in it to win it,” we definitely needed the brain break! We are back in action and ready to finish out this contest strong.

I was pretty spoiled when we lived in Arizona. Kia’s sister, Laci, is a hairstylist and would cut my hair every two weeks and the boy’s hair when needed for free.

Since moving back to Kansas City, I’ve been getting my hair cut every two to three weeks for a cost of $20. However, I’ve been cutting the boy’s hair myself and doing a pretty good job. The last couple of times I’ve cut their hair they’ve wanted to grow out the top more and fade in the sides to be able to “spike” their hair like dad does. This presented a problem for me because I have limited skills and can only use clippers. So this weekend we made a compromise. I cut the boy’s hair and my own. We all got buzz cuts, and are happy with them. The boys are excited to have the same haircut as me, and I can live with shorter hair and don’t mind, so far. Lessons learned. We found another way to save $40 a month!!

P.S. – THANK YOU Laci!

It’s been a while since I last checked in so I thought I would write about the contest overall. It’s been fun interacting with so many people that really care about helping you. We’ve learned to live without some things and how to indulge responsibly in others. It’s kind of how experts say don’t diet, change your lifestyle. I feel like we’ve been on a financial diet and are beginning to really see progress. As Kia mentioned last week, we recently transferred our last credit card balance to a much lower interest rate card offered through CommunityAmerica Credit Union. That’s huge for us! We have two more goals to meet before the contest is over; 1) pay off that last credit card; and 2) make some real progress toward paying off Kia’s car. I can’t believe how much progress we’ve been able to make over the past six months and how much progress we’ll have made by the end of the year.

Through the contest we’ve focused so much on positioning ourselves in the future with little debt that we really haven’t concentrated on what or how to save for the future. At our last meeting, we discussed how to begin to do this. We set up a Roth IRA and will begin to put a little in it each month. Discussing our options and strategies with Dana and Rance really opened my eyes to all the complexity involved. Thank you guys for helping and encouraging us take action. I would encourage everyone to discuss options with your CommunityAmerica financial specialist before you begin as well. Before we know it we’ll be working through Charlie’s laddering techniques and really be putting our money to work.

We’ve learned so much through the contest and are blessed to have such a wonderful team at CommunityAmerica.
