Makeover Mania

Last weekend was Makeover Mania at the T-Bones stadium. The group events are always fun because I get to see the other families and hear how they're doing and get new ideas on how Jim and I can get more financially fit. We played a couple games that were fun. One was a taste test to compare the difference between name brand and store brand foods. I could tell a difference on some but everything still tasted good. When I realized that switching to the store brand on 6 or 7 items could save almost $10 on a grocery bill, those store brands started tasting better and better! We also did a comparison between a new car and a used car and ALL the expenses from purchase cost to maintenance to insurance. This is something that I'm quite familiar with due to Jim's love of cars but it's still an eye opener to see it written down on paper and realize how much money we spend on something that is intended to get us from point A to point B.

One of my favorite pieces of information came from a Amy Grothaus, CommunityAmerica's Assistant Vice President of their Clay County branches. She organizes her credit union accounts and names them to make them personal. She said it was similar to an envelope system where money is allocated to specific uses and put in envelopes each month, but instead of envelopes she utilizes multiple credit union accounts. This was both crazy and wonderful to me! When Jim and I started this Makeover, thought we had too many bank accounts and that was why we were having trouble keeping track of expenses and keeping on the same page financially. I've realized over the past seven months that it wasn't the number of accounts - it was our lack of communication on our spending habits and savings goals that was causing the issue. I love the idea of creating a separate account and naming it "Vacation Account" or "New Car" or whatever else it is that we want to "buy" before actually buying. Being able to label that goal and work towards it together is a really cool idea to me.

Time flies when you're having fun
user_icon   Another week has just flown by! I’m half way through the summer session for Irish dance classes and totally loving it! I’m still having to get used to budgeting my time for all of my activities…work, dance classes, dancing at the pub, talking to Jim on the phone, and even making time to work out. I underestimated how much additional time would be involved in running my own business – there’s a lot of time used behind the scenes with paperwork, marketing and scheduling. I think that once I get through all of the “firsts” (first schedule, first lessons, first class handouts, etc.), things will be easier and take less time the second time around. Even though my expenses right now are minimal, I’m glad that I’ve had six months of financial coaching under my belt before getting my business started. It definitely has me approaching it with a plan. The budgeting that Jim and I are doing personally is really helping me budget for my business both financially and in regards to time management.

In addition to teaching, I’m trying to get my name out there as much as possible to promote classes for the fall. Some of my girls helped me with a performance at the T-Bones this past weekend. We had so much fun and got a lot of good, free PR. My coach Charlie just happened to be at the game in the same section that we danced! He took some pictures that I’ll get posted this week. I went in to the summer with a goal of how many students I wanted to have and I’ve already almost doubled that! My goal for the fall is to double it again - I like having the set number to work towards and measure my progress.

Already July
user_icon   It's hard to believe that it is already July - this year is going by fast. A lot has happened for Bridgid and I since we started the competition. I can't say enough to how proud I am of her for all her hard work in getting her school started. I'm very thankful to have such an awesome partner for this competition. I couldn't do this without her.

We are approaching another challenge. Our 5 year anniversary is coming up next month. Aside from the obvious separation issue, it's a big temptation to stray from the budget when I have ideas of things I'd like to do/buy for her. After discussing it we decided that we are going to give the trip we're taking to each other as our anniversary/birthday/Christmas combination present, and to allow only one small additional gift that can be carried along with us to give while we are on the trip. This was Bridgid's idea and I like it because it keeps us in check while still having some small surprise to enjoy while we're there.

That's all for now, thanks for everyone's support!
