First of all, on this Memorial Day weekend, I want to say thanks to everyone who serves our country, both military and civilian, especially those who have been killed in action.
I love Memorial Day weekend, the official mark of the start of summer. I also love getting paid to not work - three day weekends are the best! One thing I typically do not do on a holiday weekend is shop. I try to avoid the malls at all cost, especially during busy weekends. However, the holiday also means sales and savings. I saved my grocery shopping until the weekend, knowing that there are a lot of items I can get at discounted prices during the long weekend. There are other items I need around the house as well that I'll purchase this weekend (why do all the light bulbs die at the same time?!). It's also a good time for me to take advantage of a few clothing items that I want for the summer using coupons that I got in the mail in addition to the Memorial Day sales. If I'm going to fulfill a want, it's going to be cheap!
I'm also taking advantage of free events around town for entertainment, such as the Celebration at Union Station. Hanging out with friends, listening to the symphony and watching fireworks will be fun, relaxing and not break the bank!
Aside from holidays, this past week has been about getting back in to the great habits that Jim and I were working on prior to our month of travel and fun. I'm glad we're at the end of the month and have a brand new month ahead to start fresh!

Coming home for a little while brings a nice chance to relax, see some friends, catch up on sleep, and more importantly meet up with Bridgid, Charlie, and Leslie in person to see how we are doing so far. I think we're all pretty happy with our progress, but there are still some things that we decided need work which we are going to focus on for the remainder of the competition. One of these is setting a goal amount to have in savings within the next five months, so I'm excited to get things going to that end. Being home also posed some challenges for us in that there were a few events that we attended, i.e. friends in town, a wedding, etc, and none of these things lend themselves to "saving" so much as they do to "spending". I think we made it through relatively unscathed, but Bridgid and I decided that we really need to tie things off for the remainder of the month in order to try and compensate for what we spent. |

| Jim is home! And, Getting started on my small business! |

It’s been one of those weeks where I can’t even tell you what day it is…thus, I forget to even blog! Jim is back in town – YAY! It’s so great to have him home! And so are many of our closest friends for a wedding this upcoming weekend. It’s so fun to have so many great people around, but it definitely makes it hard to stick to budgets and save money. Even just our first grocery trip was an eye opener! We stuck to Aldi for the bulk of our shopping and that helped a lot. But our entertainment budget feels like it’s going through the roof! There are so many opportunities to go out to eat and drink and it’s hard to talk ourselves out of it. We’re used to following up on each other from a distance – it seems so much easier to give in when we’re face to face!
We also had a chance to meet with our coaches while Jim was in town. It was great to have him at the meeting and hear his thoughts on how we’re doing and get feedback together. We also got to talk to one of the advisors in the Business Services department of CommunityAmerica – this was VERY exciting for me! We’re going to discuss different options to build business credit and lending, further down the line. I was really interested in the credit portion because it totally follows along with what my coach, Leslie, taught us at our last group meeting. It hadn’t occurred to me that my business would build credit and build its reputation the same way that Jim and I are building our personal credit. More on that as we move forward :)
Until next week…if I can keep my head on 'til then! |

I just got back from my sister's wedding in Rhode Island. It was a beautiful wedding on the beach with so many friends and family attending. It was so nice to spend time with my parents and sisters, who I don't get to see very often! It's during times like this that spending seems to get out of control... wedding, traveling, dining out, etc. Luckily, most of the big expenses were paid in advance (dress, shoes, flight), but it's still so easy to lose track. Jim is coming back on vacation for a few weeks (YAY!) and we have another wedding to attend in Kansas City. We're planning on meeting with our coaches while Jim is in town. The two of us also plan on sitting down to set a budget for the next few weeks. I've gotten used to having smaller expenditures for grocery shopping and things like that, so I don't want it to be a shock at the end of the month after shopping for two. |
